In the early summer of 1990, a small collective of designers and artists began to gather in an unused pathological laboratory near New Delhi’s historic Connaught Circus, to work in an atmosphere free of pre-determined notions of design, art, crafts, and ‘the market’. From those beginnings, People Tree has grown, over 23 years, into a successful and independent business led by a vision of sustainability, collaboration, and creativity.

The ‘Tree’ has branches —in Delhi and Goa, and has also helped similarly inspired initiatives to come up elsewhere. As a widely recognized brand of distinctively designed and handcrafted products and clothing, People Tree is associated with a simple and attractive idea (in the words of the great bluesman Willie Dixon): Love the life you live, Live the life you love!

Love is what goes into the making of every single product that originates in its studios and workshops, and love is what comes back: The Tree does not have customers. It has a community—of ‘rasiks’, fans, friends, and fellow travelers.
